Board Members

F. Francis Najafi

F. Francis Najafi is the Chairman of the Board for Global Capacity and Founder and CEO of Pivotal Group, a leading investment company focused on private equity and real estate. He founded the privately held firm 30 years ago, investing in landmark properties. Pivotal Group acquired Global Capacity in May 2011. Pivotal Group's real estate investments have included major hotel properties including the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, Class A commercial office properties such as 650 California Street in San Francisco, and community development projects, including Promontory in Park City. Drawn by the unrealized potential of well-managed, middle-market companies with unique assets, Mr. Najafi entered the private equity market in 2002, and acquired Network Solutions, the world's largest domain name registry, in 2003. His acquisition philosophy is to initiate and support management-led efforts to build long-term value through the adoption of disruptive innovation, developing new products, expanding markets served and continuously optimizing cost structure. Mr. Najafi completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU), followed by two Masters Degrees from Thunderbird – The School of Global Management, and the University of Southern California (USC). At USC, he began his entrepreneurial activities while a Ph.D. candidate in International Political Economy. Over the past quarter century while heading Pivotal Group, Mr. Najafi devoted significant time and resources to causes in the public interest. His commitment to community service spans the world. Mr. Najafi is a board member of EastWest Institute, a global think-and-do tank that devises innovative solutions to pressing security concerns, as well as a member of Urban Land Institute and a governor of the ULI Foundation, which generates funding for research and public service activities that enhance communities. Additionally, he is active in the World President's Organization, a global organization focused on corporate responsibility and personal service, as well as the Chief Executive's Organization (CEO), which represents 2,000 global leaders who represent leading businesses around the world. In Arizona, Mr. Najafi is a trustee of Thunderbird - The School of Global Management Institute, and foundation board member of the Translational Genomics Research Institute, which employs innovative advancements from the Human Genome Project. Mr. Najafi's wide-ranging philanthropic interests include the Arizona Science Center, PARSA Community Foundation, Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA), Science Foundation Arizona, and Teach for America.

Patrick Shutt

Patrick Shutt is the Vice Chairman of the Board for Global Capacity. Mr. Shutt has over two decades of management experience in the information services and telecommunications industry, and has a strong record of entrepreneurial achievement in both the United States and Europe. Most recently, he served as CEO at Global Capacity; under Mr. Shutt’s leadership, Global Capacity’s One Marketplace™ became the industry benchmark for automation and efficiency in the access network space. Mr. Shutt joined Global Capacity via the 2006 acquisition of 20/20 Technologies and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Magenta net-Logic, where he served as Chief Executive Officer.  In 1997, Mr. Shutt co-founded Universal Access, where as CEO, he grew the company from $0 to $144 million run rate in four years, earning the 2002 Deloitte and Touche Fast 500 Award as the fifth fastest-growing company in the US, achieving a growth rate of over 158,000%. In 2000, he led Universal Access through its Goldman Sachs-led Initial Public Offering, with an initial market capitalization of over $3 billion. In 2002, Mr. Shutt co-founded 20/20 Technologies, which acquired UK-based Magenta net-Logic prior to the sale of 20/20 Technologies to Global Capacity in 2006. Mr. Shutt began his career with Sprint Communications, followed by stints at Cable and Wireless PLC and Teleport Communications Group (TCG). In 1996, Mr. Shutt led a TCG spin-out organization named Arista Communications before co-founding Universal Access. Mr. Shutt holds both a B.A. and an M.B.A. from Wagner College. He was an accomplished soccer player in both the UK and the US, participating in the US Junior Olympic Development program. Mr. Shutt remains active as a youth soccer coach. He is a US-landed immigrant and a British citizen, and currently lives in Chicago with his family.

Richard Garner

Richard Garner is Chief Financial Officer of Pivotal Group, and has been an integral part of Pivotal Group's management team for more than a decade. Mr. Garner is responsible for overseeing the accounting and finance requirements of Pivotal and its portfolio ventures. As a Certified Public Accountant, he has more than 20 years of accounting, finance and general business experience, including 10 years as a consultant, auditor and business advisor with the national CPA firms of Ernst & Young and Kenneth Leventhal. He enjoys community service, including serving as an active youth leader with the Boy Scouts of America to help shape the lives of America's youth. Mr. Garner received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Northern Arizona University.

Mark C. Maletz

Mark C. Maletz is a senior fellow at the Harvard Business School. He is an internationally recognized thought-leader in the areas of strategy, leadership development and organizational transformation. His research and consulting activities focus on helping companies to rethink their business strategies, improve their leadership capabilities, and reshape their cultures with an orientation towards innovation, values and performance. He has been responsible for more than 50 large-scale leadership development and organizational change initiatives in companies across a variety of industries, both in the Americas and in Europe. Previously, Maletz was a partner at McKinsey & Company and a leader of the firm's organization practice. At McKinsey, he led dozens of change-related, M&A, and financial services engagements, as well as a major research initiative on innovation and "Managing in the Whitespace" (which resulted in an HBR article in February 2001). He was also a Professor at Babson College, where he pioneered experiential approaches to leadership development and the shaping of organizational culture, including work in the area of corporate entrepreneurship. Mr. Maletz has developed a unique ability to work across levels of an organization and to bring new "lenses" (i.e. ways of seeing the world and workplace) to the organization. His graduate work in Cognitive and Computer Science was done at the University of Michigan and the Industrial Technology Institute. He is a founder of the Center for Research on Corporate Performance. He is also the Chairman of the executive committee of the EastWest Institute, a member of the board of SKIL Group (a Mumbai-based infrastructure development company), and sits on the boards of three entrepreneurial technology businesses. He is married, has three children, and lives in Arizona with his wife, Ilana.

Mohsen Moazami

Mohsen Moazami is a General Partner at Columbus Nova Technology Partners (CNTP), a novel global technology investment firm combining the best attributes of venture and private equity business models. Moazami’s representative current investments are Violin Memory, Kaazing, Tomfoolery and Bina Technologies. Moazami was an early investor in Webs.com, acquired by Vistaprint, Powerset, acquired by Microsoft, ParAllyle, acquired by Affymetrix, Social Gaming Network, acquired by Mindjolt. Moazami currently serves on the Boards of Global Capacity, Kaazing & Think Big Analytics. Previously, Moazami was a member of the Cisco executive staff from 2000 to 2011. Most recently, he was on the senior leadership teams of the Emerging Markets (LatAm, Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East, Russia, CIS & Africa) and Globalization Centre in Bangalore, India responsible for strategy, operations and financial results across EM, a theater generating in excess of $5B in revenue in fiscal year 2011. Moazami also led Cisco’s Strategic Consulting across EM. Moazami and his team worked with senior government and business leaders to help drive digital, broadband-based country transformation as well as improve national competitiveness and standard of living. Moazami a member of the Investment Advisory Council of the Turkish Prime Minister and served as a member of the Strategy Council of the Global Alliance for ICT and the Development of the UN Department of Economic & Social Affairs. Before joining Cisco, Moazami was a managing partner at Kurt Salmon Associates (KSA), in charge of the global e-business practice. Prior to KSA, Moazami founded and oversaw the growth of Stanford Business Systems, a software & systems integration firm acquired by KSA. Moazami recently received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor for outstanding achievement and noteworthy U.S. citizenship. Moazami has a graduate degree from Stanford University. He has been regularly featured on Bloomberg TV, CNBC, WSJ, FT,  and World Economic Forum.

Bill LaPerch

Bill LaPerch is the former President and Chief Executive Officer at AboveNet Communications, Inc. A telecommunications and technology industry veteran with more than 30 years of experience, Mr. LaPerch helped establish AboveNet as a recognized leader in providing optical connectivity solutions for Fortune 1,000 companies.  Before joining AboveNet, Mr. LaPerch was President of Network Services and President of Enterprise Services at Metromedia Fiber Network, Inc., a provider of metro fiber services. He was also Senior Vice President of Network Services at MCI and held various executive positions at NYNEX Corporation. Mr. LaPerch currently serves on the boards of Windstream Communications, Digital Realty Trust, Inc. and Imation Corp. He also serves as an advisor to FirstLight Fiber and Cross River Fiber, both privately held companies.  A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Mr. LaPerch holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Columbia University.

Jerry Pence

Jerry Pence is a Managing Director of Pivotal Group. With more than 14 years of transaction experience in private equity and investment banking, Mr. Pence is responsible for all key aspects of the investment transaction process. His responsibilities include investment origination, transaction structuring and negotiating, and portfolio company oversight. In addition to his position on the Global Capacity board, Mr. Pence has previously served on the boards of directors for Direct Brands (owner of the Columbia House, Book-of-the-Month, and BMG Music club businesses), Innovative Brands, Trend Homes, NxTV, and Network Solutions. Prior to joining Pivotal Private Equity in 2009, Mr. Pence was a partner at Najafi Companies, a Phoenix-based private equity firm. His previous experience also includes positions with Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch, primarily focusing on mergers and acquisition transactions. Additionally, for The Boston Consulting Group, he concentrated on consumer products, logistics and distribution, and energy sectors, among others. Mr. Pence is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
